A well-known radio doctor rails against the term “alternative medicine”. “Medicine is medicine” he would say, and then go on to state that the only medicine is what has been accepted by the medical community – there is no “alternative”.
While I have nothing against forms of medicine and healing sanctioned by the broad medical community, it’s only reasonable to believe that doctors don’t know everything. So much of modern medicine began with old folk remedies. Aspirin never went through rigorous double-blind studies, but was accepted after years of demonstrated efficacy. Studies have demonstrated positive effects from such eastern practices as tai chi and acupuncture.
That said, I also believe that if a form of alternative healing is valid, there is a scientific basis for it just waiting to be discovered.
