Tarot cards are nothing more than picture cards representing events and circumstances that we come across in our lives – such as change, patience, determination, joy, reflection, heartache, and decisions.
My introduction to tarot cards began with the TV series Dark Shadows, which I used to watch when I was in elementary school. If I remember correctly, they used the Swiss 1JJ Tarot deck. I would see it for sale at the local Gemco department store, where I eventually got the nerve to buy it. I was still young at the time and never really learned to read them. In fact, I ended up throwing them away during a strong fundamentalist religious phase I went through later on.
It wasn’t until years later that I came to realize that the true power of the images is to help us to understand ourselves better, and to help us reflect on our life situations and our role in affecting what happens to us. They are like a door to our subconscious – a mixture of psychology and philosophy.
